To mark International Volunteer Day Dr Eyoisiyas Arega tells us about his time working with Engera…

I've been following the incredible work of Engera for more than two years and have been actively involved with the organization since August 2023. I've had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the impact that Engera's collaborative approach has had on the community.

I’m inspired by Engera's mission to deliver essential healthcare to remote, underserved communities in rural Ethiopia. Having seen the immense challenges these communities face, sometimes having to travel miles on foot just to access basic health services, I’m drawn to Engera's dedication to providing quality care to those who need it most. Engera's services have had a profound impact on the lives of my own family and the wider community. I am proud to be part of a team so dedicated to creating lasting, meaningful change.

My day-to-day

As a Country Advisor, I advise on project implementation, monitor activities, and foster strong relationships with local stakeholders to ensure projects are progressing as planned. I collaborate with local partners to identify new initiatives and prioritize amplifying the community’s voice, showcasing Engera’s work through digital platforms to raise awareness. My role involves a mix of planning, engagement, and oversight, all aimed at maximizing Engera's impact. Ultimately, I report directly to the Executive Director, who oversees all our activities across EngeraUSA, EngeraUK, and Engera Italy, ensuring that our efforts are aligned and effective in achieving our goals.

Working with Engera has been an incredible adventure and moments that fill me with pride. Two programs that resonate with me are the Pediatrics 3-month program and the Medical Campaigns. These initiatives embody the essence of Engera's spirit, demonstrating the true power of Bidirectional collaboration between international and local partners working together as one.

Working in collaboration

It's not just about providing aid; it's about becoming an integral part of the community, collaborating closely with local health workers, sisters, and volunteers to meet the needs of patients. Seeing international volunteers take the time to learn the local language, immerse themselves in the culture, and share in the community’s challenges is inspiring. This spirit of mutual support and collaboration is both motivating and uplifting. Reciprocal learning, where we exchange valuable experiences and expertise, further strengthens the bonds between us all. I'm grateful to our founding team whose vision and conviction have instilled a sense of ownership and community in every corner of Engera's operations. This spirit of togetherness, of being part of something greater than ourselves, is what makes Engera truly special.

Empowering local communities

I've had the privilege of working with many nonprofits and they are often scrutinized for various reasons, with pros and cons hotly debated. My experience with Engera has reinforced one key lesson: true impact comes through collaboration. Rather than just providing aid, the focus is on empowering local communities to take ownership of their development. It’s about working together to create sustainable change, rather than imposing solutions from the outside. True progress means enabling communities to drive their growth, with the understanding that they possess the wisdom and knowledge of their own needs. Engera’s approach is focused on long-term, meaningful impact, not short-term fixes, and I am proud to be part of an organization that recognizes the value of this collaboration. I'm proud to be part of an organization that recognizes true progress and what we can achieve together, as equals.

This approach is about creating lasting impact that can be sustained over time and recognizing development is a long-term process that requires patience, persistence, and a deep commitment.
