Zizencho Health Centre
Highland village, Gurage Zone
Built in 2008 with Engera's support in an isolated highland village that had no road, electricity, or running water.
It now treats more than 30,000 patients a year, with a pre/postnatal ward, a TB unit, a water well and solar panels.

The work at Zizencho Health Centre
- Antenatal, delivery and postnatal care in a dedicated pre/postnatal ward — the reason families here no longer travel for hours to give birth safely.
- A tuberculosis unit providing diagnosis, treatment and follow-up across the surrounding highland villages.
- 28,000+ outpatient visits recorded in 2025 for a catchment population of 17,000+ — people travel here from beyond the immediate area.
- A water well on site, so the facility no longer depends on water carried in from outside.
- Solar panels supplying stable power for lighting, the laboratory and refrigerated vaccines.
Catchment population and patient figures are FY2025, from the Ethiopian Catholic Church Social and Development Commission plan and achievement data for the eight facilities Engera supports.

What staff and community members say
Since its official founding in 2007, Engera has worked closely with the Gurage community, including the area where my family comes from. During my visit to Zizencho, I saw how local teams, supported by Engera, have brought dependable healthcare closer to families who once faced long and difficult journeys for treatment.
